TOOLKIT:
CASE STUDY WRITING
WHAT
IS THE CASE STUDY WRITING TOOLKIT?
The
ELD Case Study Writing Toolkit is based on our wide experience working
with international development organisations both in training and in
the field documenting cases. Based on the author's experience with INGOs
in Nepal, Laos and Cambodia working with a wide range of levels and
nationalities, it's available as a PDF handbook as well as a Standard
Edition for convenient desktop study, and, for larger organisations,
the Trainer Edition is supported by a complete Training Pack.
WHAT'S
IN THE TOOLKIT?
The
Toolkit is divided into 3 main parts.
Part
One: Introduction to Case Study Writing
The
introduction presents an overview of the role of the Case Study in international
development and its value to development organisations. It discusses
how to select the case and clarifies the difference between a Case Study
and a Success Story. The section continues by discussing how to integrate
Case Studies into programmes before looking at how to organise the Case
Study into the three main parts of Challenge, Initiative and Results.
Part
Two: Writing Skills
Writing
Skills aims to give the reader a grasp of the key features of effective
writing and some useful tools and tips on writing style to make their
Case Studies efficient and engaging. There are frequent examples, clear
explanations and practical exercises throughout.
Covered
in this major section are:
The
final part of the Toolkit focuses on five real, diverse Cases from the
field. For each Case we see the original first draft of the Case Study.
This is followed by Toolkit author Neil Kendrick's feedback on the writing
as given to participants - comments on the overall effectiveness, language,
style, organisation and clarity of the writing. These are all original,
unedited comments, reflecting the real issues development workers face
in writing. Finally, for each case, we see the final version, where
the original author has applied the suggestions and the text has been
polished professionally for dissemination. All the Cases are 100% genuine,
translating REAL field experiences into powerful illustrations of success.

modules to all four.
THE
TRAINER EDITION: BUILD THE SKILLS OF YOUR TEAM - FLEXIBLY AND AFFORDABLY
With
the Trainer Edition you can conveniently reinforce the lessons in the
Toolkit through structured, well-planned sessions for your staff. For
a fraction of the cost of sending your team on training, you can pass
on the benefits of ELD's years' of experience through this 'workshop-in-a-box'.
Conducting
structured training will help you increase the impact of the programme
and make sure all staff acquire the skills of effective Case Study Writing.
The Toolkit's modules are packaged as a 25-30 hour training programme
which can be delivered in one intensive course or spread out over as
many days as you wish.
As
well as convenience, the low cost of the Trainer Edition compares favourably
to the expense of sending even one participant on a regular training
course - a big advantage when budgets are under pressure.
The
pack includes session-by-session notes, tips on preparation and delivery
and course monitoring & evaluation tools. Any trainer with good
people management skils can facilitate this straightforward programe.
There are over 150 PowerPoint slides, broken down into the various thematic
modules of the programme, providing powerful visual support to the learning
activities and discussion. Participant handouts are ready to print,
and ordering a Licence + Trainer Edition means all your team will have
access to the full Handbook and Standard Edition for reference and self-study.
PURCHASE
There
are various purchase options depending on your organisation's needs
as follows:
- PDF
Only - Immediate download of the toolkit in handbook form. (Please
note you should order one copy for each person who will receive
the handbook.)
- Standard
Edition - This edition includes the PDF handbook as well as all
the materials organised into a self-study programme for easy desktop
study.
- Trainer
Edition - In the Trainer Edition, the above materials are supplemented
with PowerPoint slides, a trainer guide and participant handouts,
allowing organisations to conduct their own training without the need
for external facilitators.
